The théière 'Calabre' was the most common type made at the Sèvres factory in the mid-late eighteenth century. This type of teapot would probably have been made as part of a set or 'cabaret'. \r\n\r\nTea drinking never became as fashionable in France as in other European countries. But the practice existed at an aristocratic level as an alternative to the usual coffee and chocolate.","physicalDescription":"Teapot and cover of soft-paste porcelain painted with enamels, moulded and gilded.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Nöel, Guillaume","id":"A24251"},"association":{"text":"painter","id":"x36959"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Sèvres porcelain factory","id":"A406"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"soft paste porcelain","id":"AAT10665"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Soft-paste porcelain painted with enamels, moulded and gilded","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AG6998","2006AF7701","2006AF7571"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"143","id":"THES49867"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"2","box":""},{"current":{"text":"143","id":"THES49867"},"free":"","case":"2","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"teapot body","id":""}],[{"text":"teapot cover","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sèvres","id":"x29522"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1765","earliest":"1765-01-01","latest":"1765-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mr John George Joicey","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"7.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Interlaced 'L's with date letter 'M'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Maker's mark in blue enamel"},{"content":"Sign for Libra","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Painter's mark in blue enamel for Noël"},{"content":"*","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"'115451' ? and 'ALS'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Painted in overglaze black to base"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Teapot and cover of soft-paste porcelain painted with enamels, moulded and gilded, painted by Nöel, Sèvres porcelain factory, Sèvres, 1765.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"panels","id":"AAT10261"},{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"},{"text":"festoons","id":"AAT167386"},{"text":"scrollwork","id":"AAT10205"},{"text":"diaper","id":"AAT231169"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.1353-1919","C.1353A-1919"],"accessionNumberNum":"1353","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":1919,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","teapot body","teapot cover"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-01","recordCreationDate":"2004-06-07","availableToBook":false}}
