He was educated at the Academy Schools and after training under Lewis Vulliamy, he took his Grand Tour in 1832, travelling to Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Spain. With the French architect Jules Goury, he carried out a detailed survey of the Alhambra palace in Spain, 'Plans, Sections and Details of the Alhambra', which he published in 1842 to 1845. It is one of the first examples of chromolithography in Britain. \n\nJones's reputation as an architect was bolstered by the Great Exhibition of 1851, when he designed the colourful interior decoration of the Crystal Palace. In the 1850s he advised the Department of Science and Art and designed numerous buildings, mainly using glass and iron. In his late career he designed interior decorations and patterns for wallpaper, carpets, silks and paper.","physicalDescription":"Drawing of an Egyptian style temple with four seated pharaohs and a doorway in the middle.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jones, Owen","id":"A8559"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x30618"}],"techniques":[{"text":"architectural drawing","id":"AAT54197"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Architectural drawings","id":"THES274432"},{"text":"Great Exhibition","id":"THES48945"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EC5224","2010EA5219"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2A","shelf":"DR82","box":"LOANS"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1850s","earliest":"1850-01-01","latest":"1859-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"20.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"11/01/2024","earliest":"2024-01-11","latest":"2024-01-11"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"18.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"11/01/2024","earliest":"2024-01-11","latest":"2024-01-11"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"One of 5 designs for the Egyptian Court, Crystal Palace: 29084.A/1 to 5.\r\n\r\nPurchased from Robert Jackson in 1880.\n\r\nOwen Jones was appointed Superintendant of the Works of the Great Exhibition in 1851, and in 1852 joint Director of Decoration of the Crystal Palace.
