Gibus was in charge of the technical side while Margaine, who had been trained in fine arts, was responsible for much of the design. The new company made table services and ornamental wares, some of which were decorated at other factories, including that of Haviland.  They exhibited in international exhibitions in Paris in 1855, where they were much praised for the whiteness of the porcelain and the beauty of its designs, and as was this vase, in 1867. The company became Gibus & Redon in the early 1870s and, when Gibus retired, in 1881, Redon &Cie. However, they were already exhibiting as 'le Maison Redon' in 1878.  This plate is a good example of  porcelain decorated in classical style by a company that was often thought to rival Sèvres.","physicalDescription":"Vase, porcelain, with applied cherub/fauns and grapes in green, unglazed","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gibus, Pierre- Justin","id":"A30822"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Gibus & Cie","id":"A32057"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2006AG8652"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139 (VA)","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"C1","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Limoges","id":"x32604"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1867","earliest":"1867-01-01","latest":"1867-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Unmarked","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Shown in the international exhibition, Paris, 1867\r\nAcquisition source: Mons Gibus et Cie\nAcquisition type: Purchase\nPurchase price: 1.12\nPurchase price note: £1.12.0 each","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase of white earthenware, glazed, with applied cherub/fauns and grapes in green, unglazed, Justin Gibus pottery factory, Limoges, 1867","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"putti","id":"AAT250465"},{"text":"fauns","id":"x35631"},{"text":"grapes","id":"x30300"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["750A-1869"],"accessionNumberNum":"750","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1869,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-06-07","availableToBook":false}}
