It was painted by Cornailles who specialised in flower painting. In the 1700s (as standards of hygiene were very different to what we are accustomed today), for those who could afford them, perfume and pot-pourri were immensely important. This vase probably had a pair when it was first sold and may have been part of a garniture or set of vases usually placed on a mantelpiece. The shape was designed by the sculptor Jean-Claude Duplessis (1695-1774) who served as Artistic Director at the Vincennes-Sèvres porcelain factory from about 1745 until his death. The model was called a pot-pourri Pompadour, named after the mistress of King Louis XV, Mme. de Pompadour who played a significant role in promoting the porcelain factory and its wares.","physicalDescription":"Pot-pourri vase and cover, soft-paste porcelain, floral festoon decoration painted in enamels and gilt on a white ground.
