The play was adapted by W. G. Wills from the tragedy of the same name by Goethe, and was performed for the first time at the Lyceum Theatre, London, 19th December 1885.  The scenery was designed by William Telbin and Hawes Craven, and the costumes were by Auguste et Cie, and Mrs Reid.
