This waistcoat is typical in style for the 1770s; the skirts have shortened to the top of the thigh. Many 18th-century waistcoats are embellished in some fashion, and embroidery was a characteristic method of decoration. On this example, machine-made net has been appliquéd to the pink silk and embroidered around the edges.\r\n\r\nThere were many inventions in the second half of the eighteenth century attempting to create machine-made net, based on adaptations of the mechanised stocking-frame. The machine-made version was much less expensive than hand-made net, and it became a popular material for decorating garments and accessories.","physicalDescription":"Waistcoat of pink silk overlaid with machine-made net and embroidered in coloured silks.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk taffeta","id":"x34754"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"},{"text":"hand embroidery","id":"x30339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk overlaid with machine-made net and embroidered in coloured silks","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AY5567","2006AY5566","2006AB7057"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"022","id":"THES310358"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Waistcoat","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1775-1785","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1785-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Waistcoat of pink silk overlaid with machine-made net and embroidered in coloured silks, made possibly in France, 1775-1785","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.134-1921"],"accessionNumberNum":"134","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1921,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-01","recordCreationDate":"2004-05-12","availableToBook":true}}
