Snuff boxes in the form of boots or shoes were made throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and this one is in the shape of a fashionable Victorian lady’s button boot of the 1860s, detailed with metal studs. The top of the boot is hollowed out to form the container. \r\n\r\nShoes and boots are traditionally associated with good luck. Snuff is a form of ground tobacco which was sniffed through the nose rather than smoked in a pipe. Decorative snuff boxes would be put on the table at social gatherings and passed around.","physicalDescription":"Snuff box in the shape of a Victorian button boot, lid missing.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood, painted, with brass stringing, brass nails in sole and heel, brass and mother-of-pearl buttons","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"},{"text":"Smoking accessories","id":"THES49036"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AM7323","2014HH2383"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404201"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Snuff box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1870-1880","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1880-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"MA/1/H926","id":"ARC163180"},"association":"Archive record"}],"creditLine":"Given by Messrs Harrods Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"7.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Part of the Talbot Hughes collection.
