They were designed to fit round the heel of a boot and were held by a strap and buckle which passed over the foot. The manufacture of spurs was a specialist craft, the makers being known as 'spurriers'. \r\n\r\nThis type, with revolving spiked wheels that pressed into the flanks of the horse, was known as a rowel spur. It  was first developed in the late Middle Ages. Some rowel spurs are elaborate showpieces with more than a dozen revolving spiked wheels.","physicalDescription":"Pair of rowel spurs, brass, with pounced and engraved ornament, dragon necks and 5 point rowels","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"brass","id":"AAT10946"}],"techniques":[{"text":"forging","id":"AAT54033"},{"text":"pouncing","id":"AAT53427"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Brass, with pounced and engraved ornament","categories":[{"text":"Arms & Armour","id":"THES48992"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Tools & Equipment","id":"THES48883"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Transport","id":"THES48881"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Equestrian equipment","id":"THES264411"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019ME9183"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES337927"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES337927"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Rowel spur","id":""}],[{"text":"Rowel spur","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"17th century","earliest":"1600-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Brass, England, 17th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Charles de Lacy, <u>The History of the Spur</u> , The Connoisseur, 1911"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Charles Chenevix Trench, <u>A History of Horsemanship</u>, Longman, 1970"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.289-1922","M.289A-1922"],"accessionNumberNum":"289","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1922,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Rowel spur [1]","Rowel spur [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-04-20","availableToBook":true}}
