The feathers (believed to be hummingbird) which line the inside of the case have faded with age, but the original iridescent colours would have been particularly striking. \r\n\r\nMade in Mexico in the late 16th century, this triptych shows the influence not only of religion but also of decorative devices common in Europe at this time. The gilded silver strapwork on the outside of the boxwood case was a popular decorative motif used widely in western architecture and decoration.","physicalDescription":"Triptych made of boxwood with hummingbird feathers and silver gilt mounts.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"boxwood","id":"AAT12002"},{"text":"silver-gilt","id":"x37998"},{"text":"feathers","id":"x35691"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Boxwood with hummingbird feathers and silver-gilt mounts.\r\n","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AL0262","2006AG1445","2006BC0165","2006BC0164","2006AF6572","2006AL0264","2006AL0260","2019LY9397"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES407561"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Triptych","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Mexico","id":"x30050"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1575-1600","earliest":"1575-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"04/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-04","latest":"2013-07-04"},"part":"Base to top of suspension loop","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"04/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-04","latest":"2013-07-04"},"part":"Across open wings when laid flat (maximum width)","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"4.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"15/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-15","latest":"2013-07-15"},"part":"Across front of triptych when closed, includes hinges","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"04/07/2013","earliest":"2013-07-04","latest":"2013-07-04"},"part":"Front to back when triptych closed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"RA Exhibition RF.2001/1243","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Carved boxwood triptych with hummingbird feathers and silver-gilt mounts, Mexico, 1575-1600.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"The Crucifixion","id":"V106"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Triptych\r\n1575–1600\n\nEuropeans were fascinated by the use of brilliantly coloured feathers in the art of the indigenous Mexica (Aztec).
