It formed the lower frieze of a largetile panel on the theme of Labour designed by Crane and Lewis F Day. Horizontal panels by crane: <i>Ploughing</i>, <i>Sowing</i> and <i>Reaping</i> and an upright panel showing the <i>Triumph of Labour</i>, werecframed by floral tiles by Day.\r\n\r\nDuring the 1870s and 80s Crane peoduced a number of ceramic designs for Maw &Co. Although Maw & Co. was a large industrial firm, Crane's expensive hand-painted work was not intended for the mass market and represented a more 'artistic' output for the company.","physicalDescription":"Tile panel, consisting of 16 tiles, painted in lustre with a scene of two men and two oxen ploughing, against a background of trailing foliage.
