Most bobbins have a long body with a narrow neck onto which the thread is wound. Wood and bone were the materials most commonly used, with ivory, metal and glass very occasionally. In the counties of the English East Midlands, where the type of bobbin lace made required the threads to be kept under tension during its working, bobbins were made of pieces of wood, bone or ivory weighted with a loop of copper wire attached to the base strung with coloured beads. The bobbins were often also decorated with inscriptions, commemorating events or with names or messages.","physicalDescription":"Bone lace bobbin with red and clear glass beads, and the inscription 'Sarah Wildman born Oct the 14 1827'.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bone","id":"AAT11798"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bone with glass beads","categories":[{"text":"Lace","id":"THES48926"},{"text":"Needlework accessories","id":"THES49006"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019MF8230"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES307232"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bobbin","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1827","earliest":"1822-01-01","latest":"1831-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Sarah Wildman born Oct the 14 1827'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bone bobbin with coloured glass beads and inscription, England, ca. 1827","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.21-2004"],"accessionNumberNum":"21","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2004,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"previous loan number","id":"THES50326"},"number":"LOAN:WALKER.1"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-19","availableToBook":true}}
