Waxes were used in a similar way to prints and medals, in order to disseminate the image of the sitter, or, like miniature paintings or silhouettes as portable mementoes. \r\n\r\nThe finishing on this portrait is astoundingly detailed. Low relief polychrome wax portraits were produced using the same basic principles as monochrome ones: modelling in soft wax, taking a plaster mould and then casting. However when the initial mould was finished it was cut into separate sections and each part cast in the prevailing colour. The pieces were then joined together on their backing using molten wax and the surface finishing completed in a similar way. On the surface additional sheets of sculpted wax and chasing has been used to add further detail. \r\n\r\nPortraits of Elizabeth Best's husband, Thomas and two of their children are also in the collection.","physicalDescription":"Polychrome wax relief of subject in half-length, profile to the left.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Percy, Samuel","id":"A11815"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Wax","id":"AAT14585"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wax","categories":[{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE4941"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES395985"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":"AAT47230"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1780-1800","earliest":"1775-01-01","latest":"1800-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"A.88-1965","id":"O96984"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"A.90-1965","id":"O96986"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"A.91-1965","id":"O96987"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Rupert Gunnis Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"9.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"without frame","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Percy No 582'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on the frame in the front."},{"content":"'Mrs Best, wife of Thos Best, Park House, Boxley <i>née</i> Irwin'.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Written on an old label on the back of the frame."}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Rupert Gunnis Esq.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Relief, wax, English, by Samuel Percy (1750-1820), about 1780-1800","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Trusted, Marjorie (ed.), <u>The Making of Sculpture.
