His exceptional fame rests on the pattern book, \"The Gentleman and the Cabinet-maker's Director', which he first published in 1754. It featured design of a variety of household furnishings in the Chinese, Gothic and Rococo taste. The \"Director\" became the most influential English Rococo pattern book, and an entire style of furniture became known as 'Chippendale'. The third edition in 1762 also included new designs in the Neo-classical taste. The family business at St. Martin's lane operated until 1813 when his son, Thomas Chippendale (the Younger), was evicted for bankruptcy.","physicalDescription":"Wax bust.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wax","id":"AAT14585"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wax","categories":[{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE4936","2019ME7255"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES395976"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bust","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr Alex Lewis","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Given by Mr. Alex Lewis, in 1964.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bust, wax, Thomas Chippendale the younger, English, early 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Gilbert, C., 'Amazing Chippendale Discovery', in: <u>Furniture History Society Newsletter</u>, no. 131, August 1998, pp. 1-2"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Chippendale, Thomas (the Younger)","id":"N15913"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.18-1964"],"accessionNumberNum":"18","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1964,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LW4707"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-30","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-16","availableToBook":false}}
