He specialised in plastics. He was one of the first trained industrial designers to work with British industry after the Second World War. He worked first for Bakelite Ltd, then set up the design department at Ekco Plastics, where his products won a number of design awards. In 1959 he left Ekco to work as an independent design consultant. This was at a time when the idea of the design consultancy in Britain was still in its infancy. One important commission in 1966 was the popular telephone known as the ‘Trimphone’, which won a Design Council Award.\r\n\r\nRowlands also designed disposable meal trays, cutlery and tableware for the transport industry - both British European Airways (BEA, 1967) and British Rail (BR). This spoon is an example of a lookalike version moulded by the same manufacturer, but without the BR or BEA logo.","physicalDescription":"Red plastic teaspoon, moulded polypropylene.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rowlands, Martyn","id":"A9341"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Cosmocord Ltd.","id":"A12176"},"association":{"text":"makers","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Moulded polypropylene","categories":[{"text":"Tableware & cutlery","id":"THES48888"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2020MN4693"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES300901"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Spoon","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1967","earliest":"1967-01-01","latest":"1967-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x30230"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the designer","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"16.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Red plastic teaspoon, designed by Martyn Rowlands in 1967 and made by Cosmocord Ltd., England","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Penny Sparke: \"Consultant Design: The History and Practice of the Designer in Industry\", Pembridge Press, 1983"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.106-2003"],"accessionNumberNum":"106","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2003,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-30","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-15","availableToBook":true}}
