Shovell was a English admiral who died in a disastrous shipwreck of the Isles of Scilly in 1707. Returning from an unsuccessful attack on Toulon his ship, the HMS Association struck the rocks killing all eight hundred men on board. It was reported that Sir Cloudesley Shovell reached the shore at Porthellick Cove but was murdered by a woman for the sake of his priceless emerald ring.
