In fact the identity of the sitter is unknown, as is the anonymous author of this work. It could be German, and is likely to date from the mid-18th century. Highly illusionistic coloured wax portraits such as this were popular amongst middle class customers in Germany and Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries, because they were faithful likenesses of those portrayed, and far cheaper than sculptures in marble or bronze.","physicalDescription":"Half-length portrait of a man, turned slightly to his left.
