Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr met while students at the Sheffield School of Art and and after graduating in 1899, moved to London and set up a partnership which lasted until 1918.","physicalDescription":"Rose bowl, silver, the bowl is a compressed hemi-spherical shape, annulated by a projecting seam with a rope moulding below.  The lower half, standing on a circular foot chased with swags and pierced with four panels entwined thorn branches, is plain except for an inscription: THE ANCIENT ZODIAC PICTURES STILL THE NEVER ENDING SONG OF HUMAN LIVES·WHICH LEAF BUD AND BLOSSOMS AS THE FLOWERS·THE SUNSHINE SHADOW PLEASURE PAIN AND WRONG ARE BUT THE UNITS OF THE QUICKLY PASSING HOURS.  Above the seam is an embossed frieze with the signs of the zodiac alternating with a roundel device with ribbons above label bearing the name of the sign.  They are AQUARIUS, PICES, ARIES, TAURUS, GEMINI, CANCER, LEO VIRGO, LIBRA, SCORPIO, SAGITTARIUS, CAPRICORNUS.  Rope moulding around the rim.  The detachable pierced cover with four radiating spokes, terminating and joined by a chased pattern of waves.  A rosette in the centre.  Twelve balls with curved projections below the rim attach the cover to the bowl.The underside has the inscription encircling the marks: OMAR·RAMSDEN·ET·ALWYN·CARR·ME·FECERUNT. Mrs Campbell-Voullaire was the sister of Mrs Carol Vinson who presented her christening set by Ramsden and Carr, aslo given to her by her grandmother, to the Museum (M.19,20,21a-d,-1975).\n\nIn a letter dated 27 November, 1975, Mrs Campbell-Voullaire states that her grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Laidlaw commissioned this bowl amongst several other pieces by Ramsden & Carr.  Mrs Laidlaw was interested in the Arts and Crafts movement; her husband however was not.  She may have encountered Ramsden & Carr through the sculptor March who executed a bust of Mrs Campbell-Voullaire, or through Edward Spencer of the Artificiers' Guild.\r\n\r\nNeg._No: HC 2981","historicalContext":"EDWARDIAN SILVER\r\n\r\nDespite relentless commercial pressures and a conservative public which favoured historicist revivals, innovations did emerge in European silverware in the early years of the 20th century, prior to the First World War.  The cup and cover (1909-10) by Child & Child of Thurloe Place, South Kensington, in a revived, German Renaissance manner illustrates the prevailing mainstream taste for historicism while the Painter and Stainers’ Cup designed by C.R. Ashbee for Harris Heal (1900-01) is a very contemporary and subtle restatement of a 17th century design and epitomises the essence of the British Arts and Crafts movement.  \r\n\r\nBy 1900, Ashbee and his Guild of Handicraft had a achieved a stylistic maturity.  For a while the Guild even showed a modest profit but events were moving swiftly.  In the 1890s the work produced by the Guild struck a fresh and original note.  By the 1900s, Ashbee was to witness others adapting his ideas and extending them further.  The workshops of Henry Wilson, Nelson Dawson and Edward Spencer of the Artificer’s Guild, Omar Ramsden and in Denmark,  Michelsen and Georg Jensen began to produce work that was richer and more self assured than the austere, products of the Guild of Handicraft.  These firms successfully popularised the Arts and Crafts philosophy and occasionally incorporated Art Nouveau tendencies.  The retailer A.L.
