The style has been linked to that of Ignaz Günther (1725-75), one of the leading Rococo sculptors of Munich, who is best-known for a series of altarpieces in Bavarian churches. This weightless, charming figure is typical of the South German Rococo. ","physicalDescription":"The putto is flying from right to left and either pointing at or holding up the main theme, or a subsidiary symbol. The body is painted in flesh tints, with dark brown hair, and is naked except for a scarf, gilt with reddish brown patches, which swings out from the right shoulder and passes across the left thigh. The head is turned to the left and looks downwards; both arms raised.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Günther, Franz Ignaz","id":"A31177"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"x43862"},"note":"ascribed to"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"limewood","id":"x42540"},{"text":"pigment","id":"AAT13109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Limewood, painted and gilded","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2015HV6698","2015HV6686","2015HV6699","2006AP8736","2018KW7637"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"3","id":"THES263060"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Statuette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"South"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1755-1760","earliest":"1750-01-01","latest":"1760-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"69","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Length of 69cm dates to the acquisition of the object in 1957.","date":{"text":"1957","earliest":"1957-01-01","latest":"1957-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"700","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Measured by Conservation, 2012","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"350","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Measured by Conservation, 2012","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"285","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Measured by Conservation, 2012","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The putto belonged to the collection of Franz von Pausinger, and was bought from his daughter. He believed it to be a work of G. R. Donner and to have served as one of the models for those on the balustrade on the Grand Staircase at Schloss Mirabell, in Salzburg. However, this is not the case. The figure has also been described as a work of Feuchtmayer or very close to that of Straub, possibly by Jorhan or Schmädel, both apprentices of Straub. Most scholars, however, now believe it to be an early Günther.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Statuette, limewood painted and gilded, a putto, South German, ca. 1755-60","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"putto","id":"AAT250465"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["A.7-1957"],"accessionNumberNum":"7","accessionNumberPrefix":"A","accessionYear":1957,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN9253","2019LU8172","2019LW3121"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-30","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-08","availableToBook":false}}
