The role was sung by Stafford Dean, who was a mainstay of post-war British opera, singing with the Royal Opera and many other companies. \r\n\r\nThe costume is designed so that, from his first entrance, the audience recognises d'Este's status; colour, richness and sheer bulk, add gravitas to the character and performer. If it had been made in lighterweight materials, it would have given quite the wrong impression. It is vast and extremely heavy, and under the heat of stage lights must have been almost unbearable to wear, let alone perform a major operatic role. It was made by Carl Bonn and Colin Mackenzie, who were acknowledged as the finest costumiers of the 1970s and 1980s, being meticulous in both cut and decoration of a garment and with an unrivalled understanding of how to translate a two-dimensional design into a three-dimensional, wearable, costume.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stennett, Michael","id":"A12117"},"association":{"text":"Costume designer","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"},{"text":"Opera","id":"THES263971"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2009BY1764","2009BY1351","2009BY1379"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342406"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342406"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Opera costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Robe","id":""}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Opera costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Robe","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1980","earliest":"1980-01-01","latest":"1980-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"200","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"150","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"100","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This costume is for Alfonso d'Este in Donizetti's opera <i>Lucrezia Borgia</i>, designed by Michael Stennett for the Royal Opera in 1980.
