After a limited competition, in 1963 the Ministry of Works asked David Mellor to design a silver table service for use in British Embassies abroad. The idea was Lord John Hope's, who was Minister of Works in the Conservative Government under Harold Macmillan. He determined that in future British embassies should be built and furnished in an obviously modern style.\r\n\r\nMellor designed the entire silver collection, which included this coffee service, a set of cutlery with stainless steel blades, a tea kettle, condiment sets, engraved silver salvers and a range of candlesticks. Unfortunately, only two embassies were actually furnished with the embassy silver, those in Warsaw and Mexico City. The new minister cancelled the project, the result of a cost-cutting exercise.","physicalDescription":"Milk jug, silver, a squat bowl resting on a plain circular foot, the sides sloping inwards, the everted spout extended from the rim, the `D' shaped handle attached to the body opposite the spout.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"David Mellor, CBE, OBE, RDI","id":"A3003"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"David Mellor Design Ltd.","id":"C2097"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"polishing","id":"AAT53867"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, raised, cast and polished.","categories":[{"text":"Design Council Award Winner","id":"THES49046"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Silver","id":"THES251836"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"}],"styles":[{"text":"Modernist","id":"AAT21474"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AP3461"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES405641"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Milk jug, `Embassy'","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sheffield","id":"x29138"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1963","earliest":"1963-01-01","latest":"1963-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1960","earliest":"1960-01-01","latest":"1960-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"CIRC.674-1965","id":"O95682"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"14.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Base: maker DM for David Mellor, crown, sterling, date letter V (1963-64)","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Part of the \"Embassy\" series which won the Design Centre Award, 1965.
