The griffin is selected both for its role in mythology as Guardian of Treasure and for its use in LOrd Carrington's arms. The silvergilt bowl represents the suns whose rays, making reference to Lord Carrington's career in diplomacy, penetrate the clouds ranged down the spiralling, oxidised black stem.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Coates, Kevin","id":"A10608"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"electroforming","id":"AAT233400"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, parcel-gilt, cast and electroformed, partly oxidised and patinated","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AU8534","2006AD0915"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES405491"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES399704"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"cups","id":"AAT43202"}],[{"text":"Box for Carrington Cup","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1987","earliest":"1987-01-01","latest":"1987-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"14","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"8.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"of bowl","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Inscribed on one collar TENAX IN FIDE, the other, RS ME FIERI FECIT (Roy Strong had me made).
