The bright cut decoration is carved at an angle so that it catches the light and sparkles.\r\n\r\nThe two decades following the First World War (1914-1918) witnessed a social revolution. During the war, women had been drafted into the workforce while the men were away at the front. After it was over, they enjoyed new political and social freedoms. Women now smoked in public and so required smoking accessories, such as this cigarette holder, that had previously been an exclusively male preserve.","physicalDescription":"Telescopic cigarette holder composed of several sections","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"aluminium","id":"AAT11015"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Aluminium tubing with incised, bright cut decoration","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Personal accessories","id":"THES48912"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AN7415"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"68 (VA)","id":"THES49730"},"free":"","case":"CA007","shelf":"001","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cigarette holder","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1925","earliest":"1920-01-01","latest":"1929-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"27","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cigarette Holder, Aluminium, no marks, Paris, about 1925","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Clare Phillips, <font -u>Jewels and Jewellery</font>, London, Victoria and Albert Museum 2000, p.111 ill.
