Britain, first-half of the 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"The cloister of the Papal Basilica of San Paul Fuori le Mura (Saint Paul Outside the Walls) dates back to the 13th century. It was originally constructed as part of the Abbey commissioned by Pope Gregory the Great (590 – 604) in close proximity to the Constantinian Basilica, built to preserve the remains of Paul of Tarsus. The four ambulatories of the cloister feature double marble columns of various shapes resting on plinths adorned with golden and coloured-glass mosaic inlays. The design of the cloister is attributed to Vassalletto and Cosmati, illustrious families of marble craftsmen active in Rome during the 13th century.\n\nSamuel Prout (1783 – 1852) was an English painter, draftsman and writer. He is better known for his watercolour architectural paintings, which allowed him to secure a place as Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and then, to Queen Victoria. He taught some of most important artists of the period such as J.M. William Turner, John Constable and John Ruskin.\n\nJames Carter (1798 – 1855) was an English engraver, and draftsman. He was born in the parish of Shoreditch in 1798, and during his youth gained the silver medal of the Society of Arts for drawing. Initially, he began his apprenticeship under Mr. Tyrrel, an architectural engraver. However, he later shifted his focus from this type of engraving to landscapes and figures. Despite not receiving any formal instruction after leaving Mr. Tyrrel, he achieved remarkable proficiency in this style. From 1830 to 1840, Carter primarily worked on engravings for various annuals, particularly Jennings's ‘Landscape Annual.’ During this period, he produced several plates featuring the works of renowned artists such as Samuel Prout, David Roberts, and James Holland.\n\nBibliographic Reference\n- Prout, Samuel.
