English examples were developed in the mid 18th century when the Chinese tea bottle was superseded by the tea caddy, having an opening large enough to accommodate a small spoon to dispense and measure the tea and when the cover (the thimble top) was no longer used as a measure. Caddy spoons were always required to be hallmarked, being excluded from the exemption of the English act of 1790 relating to small articles.","physicalDescription":"Silver, rounded bowl, edged with a pierced and scalloped frill and engraved with guilloche and wavy borders; the curved handle is engraved with foliage and a compartment for initials.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Cocks & Betteridge","id":"AUTH338151"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"piercing","id":"AAT231153"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, stampled from single sheet, bright cut engraving on handle, engraved bowl, pierced border","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2015HR7583","2015HR7584","2015HR7585","2015HR7586","2015HR7587","2015HR7588"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES408960"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Caddy spoon","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Birmingham","id":"x28748"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1813-1814","earliest":"1813-05-29","latest":"1814-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by J.
