The vertical black wooden handle form a corner with the body of the pot indented to allow space for gripping the handle.  The spout likewise forms a corner with an indentation below it.  Thus neither the handle, finial nor spout protrudes beyond the body of the cube. His primary concern was for a design which was less susceptible to damage than a conventional teapot where the projecting handle and spout are vulnerable.  Shape and material were broadly specified;  <font -i> either square, round, oval or otherwise.....the improved pot can be made of moulded earthenware or the like or made of metal</font>.
