Here the silver crest has been covered with a thin layer of gold (gilt) and has particularly skilful modelled and chased decoration. \r\n\r\nThis piece was made in silver by two silversmiths closely associated with Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the Royal Goldsmiths. It may well therefore be associated with the Prince Regent (later George IV, ruled 1820-1830), who designed uniforms and equipment for his favourite regiments.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Smith, Benjamin (II)","id":"A8860"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Smith, James","id":"A8866"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, parcel-gilt","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Arms & Armour","id":"THES48992"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AV4645"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES404514"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Helmet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1811-1812","earliest":"1811-05-29","latest":"1812-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"40.50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"30.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19.00","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"BS and IS for Benjamin and James Smith, duty and sterling on each flap.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Helmet, silver, parcel-gilt, made by Benjamin and James Smith, London hallmarks for 1811","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.146-1984"],"accessionNumberNum":"146","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1984,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-03","availableToBook":true}}
