It was made by Benjamin Smith III, whose father had worked for silversmith Matthew Boulton in Birmingham and the royal goldsmiths, Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, in London. Benjamin Smith III was an able and adventurous silversmith and worked with Henry Cole, first director of the V&A, who sought to improve industrial design by making and selling ceramics, silver and glass designed by artists. Smith went bankrupt in the year of his death, 1850, owing £100,000.","physicalDescription":"Cut glass, mounted with silver vines and grapes","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Smith, Benjamin (III)","id":"A8861"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cut glass, silver mounts","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2016JR4413"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES335758"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1841-1842","earliest":"1841-05-29","latest":"1842-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"17.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"30.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Maker, Benjamin Smith III, sterling, leopard, duty, date 'f'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cut glass and silver mounts, London hallmarks for 1841-2, mark of Benjamin Smith III","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.116-1962"],"accessionNumberNum":"116","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1962,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-06","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-03","availableToBook":true}}
