The silversmith ‘raises’ the piece from a flat disc of silver by hammering it into shape over an iron block or anvil. Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942), who designed it, was a leading figure in the British Arts and Crafts Movement which championed the revival of traditional handcrafting techniques. \r\n\r\nIn 1888 Ashbee established the Guild of Handicraft in the East End of London. It was modelled on the medieval craft workshop and set out to revive the role of the artist craftsman. At the turn of the century, the Guild was at the height of its success and produced silverwares with simple forms and restrained use of colour. Financially, however, the Guild was less successful and in 1908 Ashbee was forced to wind up its affairs.","physicalDescription":"Silver, set with turquoises, flared walls, the base embellished with pierced, openwork decoration.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ashbee, Charles Robert","id":"A8102"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Guild of Handicraft Ltd.","id":"A9111"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"turquoise","id":"AAT11164"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"piercing","id":"AAT231153"},{"text":"stone setting","id":"x34787"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, hand raised and pierced, set with turquoises","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AF6542"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"67 (VA)","id":"THES49731"},"free":"","case":"16","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Beaker","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1904-1905","earliest":"1904-05-29","latest":"1905-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"178.4","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Below rim: maker, G of H Ltd for Guild of Handicraft Ltd, leopard, date I, sterling","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"London hallmarks for 1904-5","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Designed by CR Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver set with turquoises, London hallmarks for 1904-5, mark of the Guild of Handicraft.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.238-1967"],"accessionNumberNum":"238","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1967,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-03","availableToBook":false}}
