He worked in the offices of J. D. Sedding and Henry Wilson. In 1897, on Wilson's advice, he took up metalwork. He was largely responsible for reviving the use of shagreen. Shagreen was originally a species of untanned leather, but from about 1750 nurse sharkskin or the less expensive dogfish skin was used. It was traditionally used to cover a vast variety of containers. These ranged from boxes for tea caddies, knife boxes, canteens, small pocket or presentation cases and spectacle cases.","physicalDescription":"Cigarette box:  walnut turned in a cylindrical shape, completely covered in green and grey shagreen and mounted with silver bands and with a silver finial","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"John Paul Cooper","id":"A10554"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"shagreen","id":"AAT192656"},{"text":"walnut","id":"AAT12476"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver mounts, with shagreen and walnut core and silver finial","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"}],"styles":[{"text":"Art Deco","id":"AAT21426"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AT6518"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"68 (VA)","id":"THES49730"},"free":"","case":"7","shelf":"1","box":""},{"current":{"text":"68 (VA)","id":"THES49730"},"free":"","case":"7","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cigarette box","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid for a cigarette box","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1930","earliest":"1925-01-01","latest":"1934-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Formerly in the collection of Charles and Lavinia Handley-Read.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"11.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"20.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"No hallmarks:  signed JPC for John Paul Cooper on circular shield inside the lid","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":"A8728"},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cigarette box, wood,shagreen and silver, no hallmarks, London, about 1930 mark of maker John Paul Cooper\n\n","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Jervis, Simon, <i>Victorian and Edwardian decorative art: the Handley-Read collection</i>, London, Royal Academy of Arts, 1972","id":"AUTH351463"},"details":"","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.34-1972","M.34A-1972"],"accessionNumberNum":"34","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1972,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Cigarette box","Lid for a cigarette box"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-12","recordCreationDate":"2004-03-03","availableToBook":false}}
