He was born\r\nat Cortona and after studying in Florence\r\nwent to Rome where he made his\r\ncareer, first of all attracting the patronage\r\nof the influential Sacchetti family but\r\nsoon becoming attached to the even more\r\npowerful Barberini family, whose bee\r\nemblem is seen in this design for a \r\nceremonial mace. Pope Urban VII \r\n(Maffei Narberini : reign dates 1623-44)\r\nemployed Berrettini to decorate the\r\nchurch of Sta. Bibiana (1624-2) and\r\nfollowed this with his greatest \r\ncommission, the huge ceiling in the\r\nPalazzo Barberini (1633-39).\r\nBerrettini also worked for the Pope's\r\nnephews, the Cardinals Francesco and\r\nAntonio Barberini. He later worked in\r\nFlorence on the frescoes for the Pitti\r\nPalace. Among his pupils were Luca\r\nGiordano and G.F.
