One of the scenes was the Papal Mass in SS. Giovanni e Paolo. Two pictures based on our drawing are known: one in the Cleveland Museum of Art (Morassi, 'L'opera completa', no. 264, fig. 293); the other in a French private collection (ibid., no. 265 fig. 294). Since our drawing shows no figures, it must have been made as a preparatory study before or after the cermony, when the church was empty. A rough sketch in a private collection at Monza shows the same subject with figures added (Morassi, 'Tutti i designi', no. 272, fig. 273). A study in Canterbury Museum for another of Edward's pictures, 'The Pope taking leave of the Doge', shows the interior of the Refectory of S. Giovanni e Paolo without figures and is thus a coutnerpart of our drawing. Our drawing corresponds more closely with the Paris than the Cleveland version of the painting, the latter containing a more extendde view of the church on the right.
