This was a commemorative medal made for Princess Claude of France. A gold version of this medal was given in 1547 to Princess Claude of France, the daughter of Henry II, as a christening gift by the Swiss Confederation. The date of this medal is therefore likely to be around 1547.\r\n\r\nStampfer was a Swiss die-cutter, medallist and goldsmith born in Zurich, who worked for the Mint in that city. He produced portrait-medals, seals, commemorative coins, not only for Zurich but also for other Swiss cities and German patrons, such as the Archbishop of Salzburg.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Stampfer, Hans Jakob","id":"A12076"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver gilt","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AF3796","2006AF3789"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"016","id":"THES395575"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":"AAT46025"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Switzerland","id":"x29199"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1547","earliest":"1542-01-01","latest":"1551-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"7.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"73.9","unit":"g","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Obverse","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"Reverse","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Provenance: Soulanges.
