The medal has only an obverse representing the bust of Katharina Starck of Nuremberg (previously callled Magdalena Haunolt) facing left, wearing a hat with an ornate upturned brim, and a chain. She was the wife of the Nuremberg patrician Ulrich Starck. \r\n\r\nThe groove along the edge of this piece was probably made so that the negatives of the obverse and reverse could be lined up if a medal was to be cast, and this indicates that this is indeed a model, although no medals after it are known. Habich and Bernhart had previously suggested that it was a model for the medal of Magdalena Haunolt, for which no drawing exists. However, as Maué has pointed out, the drawing for this medal is in the Staatsbibliothek, Bamberg, and is entitled Katharina Starck. \r\n\nSchwarz (1492 – d. after 1521) was born in Augsburg, and originally trained as a sculptor. He undertook his first medals on the occasion of the Imperial Diet at Augsburg (Reichstag) in the summer of 1518. He went to Nuremberg in 1519, but was forced to leave the year after, following disagreements with the authorities. Many of his drawings for his medals survive; his models were of wood and he had a highly individual style, with large, unpretentious forms, and no great attention to detail.
