The material was much prized by princely collectors, particularly when elaborately mounted. The vase was acquired from a celebrated 19th century collection, that of the Rothschild family at Mentmore Towers.","physicalDescription":"The bowl of quatrefoil section is carved on each side with a grotesque mask, and below with large projecting leaves. Beneath the lip are intaglio-cut festoons of foliage with flies and birds. The scroll handles are attached to the body by gilded silver mounts. The cover of quatrefoil section is pierced with oval openings, and is surmounted by a finial approximating to a pyramid shape. The vase is very close in decoration and facture to a rock crystal flask in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, ascribed to Dionysio and Ferdinand Eusebio Miseroni, while the execution is by his son Ferdinand Eusebio.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Rock crystal with gilded silver mounts","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2015HU0953","2015HU0954","2006BK5978","2006AF3477"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"6","id":"THES49750"},"free":"","case":"CA11","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"6","id":"THES49750"},"free":"","case":"CA11","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}],[{"text":"Cover for vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1650-1700","earliest":"1650-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"430","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"vase with lid","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"245","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"vase with lid","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"135","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"vase with lid","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured by Conservation, 2012.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"A similar flask is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. It was made in 1658, according to the inventory of the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of 1660. When Dionysio died in 1661, Ferdinand Eusebio inherited his father's workshop. The style of carving of the present object suggests a date soon after the flask in Vienna.","historicalContext":"Acquired by private treaty for £3,330 (Central Fund) from Lord Rosebery, Lot.
