Typically a young prince is surrounded by companions who play the lute, drink wine and sing or declaim poetry. This vase, however, depicts an older participant at such a party, wine glass in hand.\r\n\r\nIn many Islamic societies, scenes containing humans and animals were a common type of decoration in non-religious contexts. The source of this imagery was usually poetry, the most highly esteemed form of secular literature. \r\n\r\nLuxury copies of narrative poems were often illustrated with fine paintings, and the more familiar episodes were depicted on palace walls and objects. Love lyrics accompanied portrayals of beautiful young men and women. Odes in praise of the ruler inspired enthronement scenes. The recitation of poems at court was depicted, as were princely activities such as hunting and playing polo.","physicalDescription":"Figurine vase, fritware, decorated with underglaze colours and lustre, depicting a seated figure.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Fritware, decorated with underglaze colours and lustre","categories":[{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Vases","id":"THES48879"},{"text":"Figures & Decorative ceramics","id":"THES48954"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kashan","id":"AAT21572"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006BJ1631","2006AW3648"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WE7","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figurine vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Kashan","id":"x30242"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1220","earliest":"1215-01-01","latest":"1224-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Ades Family Collection, accepted under the Cultural Gifts Scheme by HM Government and allocated to the V&A, 2019.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"19.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Vase in the form of a seated man holding a glass of wine, Iran (probably Kashan), about 1220.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Tim Stanley (ed.), with Mariam Rosser-Owen and Stephen Vernoit, <i>Palace and Mosque: Islamic Art from the Middle East</i>, London, V&A Publications, 2004","id":"AUTH351313"},"details":"p.49, plate 63","free":""}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"figures","id":"AAT189808"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Jameel Gallery \r\n\r\n13–15 Bowl, Vase and Bottle\r\nIran, Kashan\r\n1180–1220\r\n\r\nThe bowl shows a young prince surrounded by companions.
