He was mainly interested in manuscripts (hand-written books). In 1864 he was asked to evaluate the V&A's collection of 'Illuminations'. He criticised the collection because he thought that German and Italian illumination of the later medieval period was over-represented. He suggested that the Museum should commission him to make copies rather than collect expensive originals. It could choose from a list of famous manuscripts that he would supply.\r\n\r\nIn 1866 the V&A spent nearly £100 acquiring facsimile copies of well-known manuscripts. They added a new dimension to the V&A collection, because they provided examples of such famous works as this 'Bedford Missal'. This is an icon of British history, with its portrait of the Duke of Bedford himself.","physicalDescription":"Copy from the Book of Hours made for the Duke of Bedford ('The Bedford Missal') made in Paris ca. 1423-1468","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Shaw, Henry","id":"A8840"},"association":{"text":"illuminator","id":"AAT25122"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"parchment","id":"AAT11851"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"pigments","id":"x33204"}],"techniques":[{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"illumination","id":"AAT220539"},{"text":"calligraphy","id":"AAT53162"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Water-based pigments, gilding and ink on parchment","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Manuscripts","id":"THES48922"},{"text":"Medieval and renaissance","id":"THES271264"},{"text":"Copies and Facsimiles","id":"THES253072"}],"styles":[{"text":"Gothic Revival","id":"AAT21452"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AK9243"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH (VA)","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"MS CUTTINGS","shelf":"TEMP2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Manuscript","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1860-1865","earliest":"1855-01-01","latest":"1865-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"22.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased on 23 May 1868 from Henry Shaw, together with 81 other 'specimen copies' by him.
