They are made from two or three sheets of mulberry paper (<i>kozo</i>) laminated together with persimmon juice, which strengthens the paper and makes it water-resistant. Various methods and tools are used to cut the design. This example shows carp leaping a waterfall, an image which symbolises achievement and success. Rice paste is applied through the stencil onto the cloth; the stencil is then carefully removed and repositioned on the next section of fabric, the process being repeated along the entire length. When the cloth is dyed, the colour does not penetrate the areas covered by paste.","physicalDescription":"Stencil with design of carp leaping a waterfall","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mulberry paper","id":"AAT183846"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cutting","id":"AAT53069"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Mulberry paper","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AN6541"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES393684"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Stencil","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"40.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Mr. G.
