On one side it shows Henri IV, who after a long period of civil war had established his legitimacy as King of France, and his new wife, Marie de Medici. On the other they are shown as Mars and Minerva with their little son, the future Louis XIII, between them. An eagle holds a crown over his head and he is trying on Mars' helmet.\r\nThis large medallion derives from a smaller version made two years earlier which so pleased Henri IV that he gave Dupré the right to cast and sell as many variants as he liked and forbade others to copy his work.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dupré, Guillaume","id":"A11992"},"association":{"text":"medallist","id":"AAT25337"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"},{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"},{"text":"mounting","id":"AAT81370"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cast bronze mounted in a silver rim","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Medallions","id":"THES49034"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AE4898","2006AE4973"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111 (VA)","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"DU2","shelf":"DR13","box":"10"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1605","earliest":"1605-01-01","latest":"1605-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"7.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"HENRIC.III.R.CHRIS.MARIA.AVGVSTA\r\nPROPAGO IMPERII","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Henri IV, most christian king, Marie, Empress.\r\nThe imperial line","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Medal of Henry IV and Marie de Médicis, bronze by Guillaume Dupré, French, 1605","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Jones, Mark. <u>Catalogue of French Medals</u>.
