There are two similar examples of this plaquette in the V&A collection (museum nos. 7474-1861 and 5473-1859). Plaquettes, being small and portable, allowed artists' designs to be disseminated widely and across different media. \r\n\r\nThe decoration was probably painted and gilded by the Florentine artist Paolo di Stefano (also known as Paolo Schiavo). \r\n\r\nThe relief is likely to have been used as a small shrine in a domestic setting, but it may also have been portable. The remains of two hinges at either side suggest it once had wings, which could be closed to protect the relief during travel.","physicalDescription":"Relief in painted and gilded stucco in a contemporary wood frame. The Virgin is shown in profile, holding the Child on her left arm. Two angels are painted on the frame at either side of the relief, and Eve is depicted reclining beneath it. In the pediment is a figure of God the Father, and at the bottom of the frame there is a prophet with a scroll. The console bears the inscription 'AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA'. There are hinges on either side of the frame, suggesting that the relief at one time had closable wings.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Donatello","id":"A1979"},"association":{"text":"After","id":"THES283471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Stucco","id":"AAT14966"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},{"text":"gilded","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Painted and gilded stucco in a contemporary wood frame","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BB2665","2006BB2667","2006AF3710","2006AF9820","2017JU3233","2017KB5096","2019LY0781"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"64A","id":"THES49095"},"free":"","case":"CA4","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Relief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1435-1440","earliest":"1430-01-01","latest":"1440-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"7474-1861","id":"O93235"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"5473-1859","id":"O313783"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Given by Art Fund with the aid of a body of subscribers in memory of Lord Carmichael of Skirling","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"stucco","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"9.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"stucco","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"36.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame, maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"5.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame, maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"0.90 ","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"25/01/2022","earliest":"2022-01-25","latest":"2022-01-25"},"part":"Whole object (with frame)","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries\r\nWeighed for the Donatello Exhibition (Palazzo Strozzi, Staatlisches Museen, V&A) 2022-2023\r\n","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"'Hail Mary full of grace'","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Relief, 'Virgin and Child', painted and gilded stucco in a contemporary wood frame, after Donatello, Italy (Florence), ca. 1435-40","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Motture, Peta, ed., Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance, London: V&A Publishing, 2023.","id":"AUTH394323"},"details":"pp. 174-175, cat. 2.24C, entry by Jeremy Warren,","free":"Attribution: After Donatello; Paolo di Stefano (Paolo Schiavo) "},{"reference":{"text":"Rowley, Neville, ed., Donatello: Inventor of the Renaissance, Berlin: Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, 2022.","id":"AUTH394327"},"details":"pp. 170-171, cat. 21, entry by Neville Rowley,","free":"Attribution: After Donatello; Paolo Schiavo"},{"reference":{"text":"Caglioti, Francesco, ed., with Laura Cavazzini, Aldo Galli, and Neville Rowley. Donatello: il Rinascimento, Venice: Marsilio, 2022.","id":"AUTH394729"},"details":"pp. 174-175, cat. 4.3, entry by Neville Rowley,","free":"Attribution: After Donatello; Paolo Schiavo"},{"reference":{"text":"Ajmar-Wollheim, Marta and Flora Dennis, At Home in Renaissance Italy, London: V&A Publishing, 2006.","id":"AUTH347593"},"details":"","free":""},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Cooper, Donal.
