Professionally made books used decorative initials, such as the initial Q on this fragment, to signal the main divisions of a text. There was usually a hierarchy of initials within any book to designate sections, chapters, paragraphs and other breaks. The initials were added either by the scribe or by a specialist, in spaces left blank by the scribe. The latter was increasingly the practice in the later Middle Ages. The important initials might be historiated (that is, with a figurative picture, <i>istoire</i> being the term for story) or decorated. The initial on this page shows St John the Evangelist writing at a desk within a chapel. It is a visual reference to the content of the text - the beginning of the Gospel of St John.","physicalDescription":"Recto: historiated 7-line initial I St John writing at a desk, beneath him a figure with a tall striped hat, long-billed bird in margin. \r\nInc: In principio erat verbum…\r\nBeginning of St John’s Gospel.\n11 lines on 1 column.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Di Pietro, Venturella","id":"AUTH360769"},"association":{"text":"attributed to","id":"THES286691"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"parchment","id":"AAT11851"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"pigments","id":"x33204"}],"techniques":[{"text":"illumination","id":"AAT220539"},{"text":"writing","id":"AAT54698"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Water-based pigments, gilding and ink on parchment","categories":[{"text":"Manuscript cutting","id":"THES275182"},{"text":"Manuscripts","id":"THES48922"},{"text":"Medieval and renaissance","id":"THES271264"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AM6050","2009CP4263"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"I","shelf":"81","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Manuscript cutting","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Umbria","id":"x29229"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Perugia","id":"x35221"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2nd quarter 14th century","earliest":"1325-01-01","latest":"1350-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.377-1911","id":"O779431"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"E.378-1911","id":"O93648"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.156-1911","id":"O1350556"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.157-1911","id":"O1352258"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"245","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"165","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"140","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"text block","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"110","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"text block","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Part of a group of cuttings which were bought for £38.9.0 from Carl Ewald Rappaport (his stamp) in Rome in 1911, entered in the register on 22 March 1911 (now E.371-378-1911).\r\nCuttings from the same manuscript in the V&A collection: Museum nos E.377-1911, E.378-1911, CIRC.156.1911, CIRC.157-1911.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Leaf from a Missal showing St John writing at a desk, Perugia, 2nd quarter of the 14th century.
