By the beginning of the 7th century large quantities of silver pieces with exotic shapes and styles were imported along the Silk Road from Iran and Central Asia to China. Chinese craftsmen often reproduced foreign shapes and acquired new manufacturing techniques from Central Asian silversmiths who had settled in Chinese urban centres beginning in the mid 7th century.\r\n\r\nThis stemcup was used to drink alcohol. The chased decoration of ducks and floral scrolls on a finely punched ground suggests the influence of similar Sasanian silver examples.","physicalDescription":"Silver stemcup with a chased decoration depicting ducks and floral scrolls on a ground of finely punched dots","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"chasing","id":"AAT54016"},{"text":"punching","id":"AAT235631"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Chased and punched silver","categories":[{"text":"Drinking","id":"THES48965"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[{"text":"Tang","id":"AAT18420"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2019MB5520","2006AF4335","2018KP0034"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES361843"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Stemcup","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"China","id":"x29398"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"618-799","earliest":"0618-01-01","latest":"0799-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with Art Fund support, the Vallentin Bequest, Sir Percival David and the Universities China Committee","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"8.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver stemcup with chased and punched design, China, Tang dynasty, 7th-8th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Kerr, Rose (ed.), Chinese Art and Design: the T.T.
