Another female photographer of the time, Julia Margaret Cameron, also explored the theme of affection between women. Behind the subject lie the traditions of Christian imagery, most notably the New Testament story of the Visitation. In this narrative Mary, the future mother of Jesus Christ, visits her elderly cousin Elizabeth, who has just become pregnant with John the Baptist.\r\n\r\nLesbian readings have also been attached to Hawarden’s photographs in such works as Lillian Faderman’s <i>Surpassing the Love of Men</i> (1981) and Carol Mavor’s <i>Becoming: The Photographs of Clementina, Viscountess Hawarden</i> (1999). Such readings are later interpretations, far from the original meaning of the photographs. Nevertheless, they have served to keep Hawarden’s photographs current and widely circulated and discussed.","physicalDescription":"Sepia photograph, mounted on green card, of two young women standing in an embrace","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hawarden, Clementina (Viscountess)","id":"A8493"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"albumen process","id":"AAT133274"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen print from wet collodion glass negative","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Gender and Sexuality","id":"THES48940"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BT8649","2006AF3717"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"33","box":"HV"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}],[{"text":"albumen print","id":"AAT127121"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"South Kensington","id":"x31226"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1862-1863","earliest":"1857-01-01","latest":"1866-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Lady Clementina Tottenham","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"From departmental notes\r\n\r\n'Clementina, Lady Hawarden (Untitled) Photographic Study (or) Study from Life (D.579) c.1862-c.1863 5 Princes Gardens, interior: Isabella Grace (three-quarter length; back to camera) and Clementina (three-quarter length), standing, hands on each other's shoulders, Clementina looking into Isabella Grace's face. 112 x 80 mm PH 457-1968:555 Literature: ed.
