She holds a fan to her head, as the focus of the roofline swoops down to her. The dark band across the dress continues the geometrical theme.\r\n\r\nThis graceful but graphic pose inspired the etcher Francis Seymour Haden. He borrowed and adapted it for <i>The Assignation</i> (1865), where the figure is shown leaning against a tree in a wood. The title of the etching seems rather obvious compared to the open meanings of Hawarden’s untitled photographs, which she exhibited as ‘Photographic Studies’ or ‘Studies from Life’.","physicalDescription":"Sepia photograph, mounted in green card, of a young woman leaning on a balustrade.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hawarden, Clementina (Viscountess)","id":"A8493"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"albumen process","id":"AAT133274"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen print from wet collodion on glass negative.","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[{"text":"Victorian","id":"x29321"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BT8488","2006AF3736"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"33H","box":"XII"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}],[{"text":"albumen print","id":"AAT127121"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"South Kensington","id":"x31226"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1861-1862","earliest":"1856-01-01","latest":"1865-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Lady Clementina Tottenham","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"102","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2015-12-31"},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"164","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2015-12-31"},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"266","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2015-12-31"},"part":"green card","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"330","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2015-12-31"},"part":"green card","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Mount is half imperial portrait","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"From departmental notes\r\n\r\n'Clementina, Lady Hawarden (Untitled) Photographic Study (or) Study from Life (D.347) c.1861 5 Princes Gardens, exterior: terrace: Isabella Grace (left profile), standing, leaning on balustrade, right hand holding fan to head.
