This was based on the number and relation of the reproductive parts of flowers. The book was published in various combinations of plates, coloured and uncoloured. This is one of several proof plates, printed before the lettering was added. Miller's publication gives in a single plate a complete account of the plant's habit, structure and life cycle. Linnaeus himself praised the illustrations extravagantly as 'the most beautiful and accurate . . . since the beginning of the world'.","physicalDescription":"Engraving of a botanical illustration of an allium globemaster, depicting a green stalk with large green leaves and a flower head at the top of two stems. The flower heads are spherical, one depicted as having multiple small flowers covering it, the other only has some flowers. At the bottom of the sheet there are multiple depictions and sections of parts of the plant.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Miller, John","id":"A11924"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"},{"text":"hand-colouring","id":"AAT133555"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving, coloured by hand","categories":[{"text":"Printed pages & sheets","id":"THES48904"},{"text":"Science","id":"THES48898"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"},{"text":"Gardens & Gardening","id":"THES49002"},{"text":"Botanical art","id":"THES277744"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2296","2010EL5441"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"TOPIC","shelf":"DP3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"botanical illustrations","id":"THES399050"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1770-1777","earliest":"1770-01-01","latest":"1777-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"54.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"37.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Botanical illustration, Globe Flower by artist John Miller, plate from <i>An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus</i>, published in parts in London between 1770 and 1777, engraving, coloured by hand; British.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Miller, John. <u>An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus</u>.
