Such a precise dating emphasises how Constable's drawings were a kind of visual diary. This drawing was done on the artist's first visit to Salisbury. It was the source for the well-known painting Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds of 1823, which is also in the V&A’s collection. Constable often referred back to earlier drawings in his paintings in this way. The finished painting, though, was not always an exact transcription of the drawing.","physicalDescription":"View of Salisbury Cathedral with large tree in foreground in black and white chalk on grey paper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Constable, John (RA)","id":"A8267"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Black and white chalk on grey paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2240","2006AV4098","2017JU1348"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"15","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1811","earliest":"1811-01-01","latest":"1811-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Isabel Constable, daughter of the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"195","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"299","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from Catalogue of the Constable Collection, Graham Reynolds, Victoria and Albert Museum, London: HMSO, 1973","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Salisbury Cathedral Sepr. 11 & 12--1811--S.W. view--","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed on the back in pencil by the artist Salisbury Cathedral Sepr. 11 & 12--1811--S.W. view--"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"'In the year 1811 Constable's exhibits at the Royal Academy comprised 'Twilight', and 'Dedham Vale: morning' (now in the collection of Sir Richard Proby).
