These may have been the result of retouching in 1831. On the back Constable notes that the retouching was done at Hampstead, on the day after the Coronation of King William IV, which he had attended. He said that he had been ‘eleven hours in the [Westminster] Abbey'.\r\n\r\nConstable's grasp of linear perspective is still not perfect, even at this late date in his career. His real interest is in the contrast between light and shadow. Although the watercolour gives more solid blocks of tone than pen or pencil, it is applied with visible diagonal brushstrokes. This gives it a linear quality.","physicalDescription":"Water-colour of a house and bridge.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Constable, John (RA)","id":"A8267"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour on a page from a sketchbook","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2372","2006BF2234","2017KC2983"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"15","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"14/11/1821","earliest":"1821-11-14","latest":"1821-11-14"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"09/09/1831","earliest":"1831-09-09","latest":"1831-09-09"},"association":{"text":"retouched","id":"AAT136723"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Isabel Constable, daughter of the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"173","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"262","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'14 Nov 182[1]'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inscribed below on left with the brush by the artist."},{"content":"'Old Houses on Harnham Bridge.
