But from the 18th century samplers emphasised the maker’s ability to embroider words and pictorial motifs. Mary Hall’s sampler is a mixture of old and new fashions. The Montgolfier Brothers’ hot air balloon, the first recorded example, had taken off in France only three years earlier, in 1783. The verse ‘Fragrant the rose is’, however, is in a melancholy poetic tradition that dwelt on the brevity of mortal life and was particularly popular in Britain in the 16th and 17th centuries.","physicalDescription":"Sampler embroidered in coloured silks on a wool and silk blend fabric. The sampler is embroidered at the upper edge with two verses in blue thread above the maker's name and date, and the rest of the sampler is worked with spot motifs, mainly containers of stylized flowers, in coloured silks. A hot-air balloon with a flag hanging over each side of the basketis stitched just below the maker's name.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hall, Mary","id":"A12033"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool and silk","id":"x30487"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"}],"techniques":[{"text":"embroidering","id":"AAT53653"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wool and silk blend fabric, embroidered with silk threads","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2006BE7102"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343559"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"needleworking","id":"AAT53652"}],[{"text":"embroidery","id":"x40351"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1786","earliest":"1786-01-01","latest":"1786-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Miss Emma Monteith","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Fragrant the Rose is but it fades in time/ The Violet sweet but quickly past the prime/\r\nWhite Lilies hang their heads and soon decay/ And whiter snow in Minutes melts away/\r\nSuch and so with'ring are our early Joys/ Which Time or Sickness speedily destroys","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"thread","method":"embroidering","position":"centre of upper edge","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Textual information","note":"Textual information; centre of upper edge; embroidering; thread"},{"content":"Virtue's the chiefest Beauty of the Mind/ The noblest Ornament of Human kind/ Virtue's our Safeguard and our guiding Star/ That stirs up Reason when our senses err.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"thread","method":"embroidering","position":"just above centre of sampler","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"Textual information","note":"Textual information; just above centre of sampler; embroidering; thread"},{"content":"Mary Hill.
