A Missal is a service book that contains the text necessary for the performance of the Mass. The text on the page is printed and the initial is hand-painted. It shows the <i>Lamb of God</i> with the banner of the Resurrection. Printing with movable type was invented by a goldsmith named Johannes Gutenberg in the Rhineland city of Mainz. The first printed book, the Gutenberg Bible, was produced about 1455. It aimed to copy the design of manuscript (hand-written) books in every respect. Scribes and illuminators were still employed to add the decoration and rubrics by hand.","physicalDescription":"Printed red and black ink on parchment with hand illumination on burnished gold and green ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Reyser, Georg","id":"A11909"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Parchment","id":"AAT11851"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"pigments","id":"x33204"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"parchment","id":"AAT11851"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"illumination","id":"AAT220539"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Medieval and renaissance","id":"THES271264"},{"text":"Incunabula","id":"THES281186"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG1724"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF (VA)","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC11","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Printed leaf","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Würzburg","id":"x32658"},"association":{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1484","earliest":"1479-01-01","latest":"1488-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"375","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"255","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"280","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"text block","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"180","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"text block","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from J. and S.
