Véron had previously been secretary of <i>Gazette des Beaux-Arts</i>, a publication with a similar format. Initially published weekly, <i>L’Art </i>combined original etchings and copies after works of art, with essays on art written by leading art critics of the day, such as Philippe Burty (1830-1890) and Charles Yriarte (1832-1898). The publication of original etchings in <i>L’Art </i>is part of the broader nineteenth century etching revival, which occurred in France, Britain, and America, and was characterised by artists reclaimed etching as an autonomous art form, aligning themselves with the tradition of the ‘peintre-graveur’ (painter-printmaker) and looking to earlier great masters of the medium, like Rembrandt. Similar publications of this period include <i>Eaux-Fortes Modernes</i> (1862-1867), <i>L’Illustration Nouvelle </i>(1868-1880) and <i>L’Eau Forte</i> (1874-1881). Unlike these, however, <i>L’Art</i> included essays and copies after paintings and earlier prints, thereby playing a role in disseminating art to a wider audience. Véron was particularly interested in aiming his publication at an enlightened, bourgeois audience. \r\n<i>L’Art </i>was an expensive publication, initially costing subscribers 200 francs annually for their weekly copy. Supported by the Libraire de l’Art, various publishers collaborated with Véron on its publication, including Charles Delagrave, founder of Éditions Delagrave. After Véron’s death in 1889, Emile Molinier, a specialist in Prints at the Louvre, took over its publication. In the 1890s, printmaker Théophile-Narcisse Chauvel ran L’Art. Chauvel had previously been involved with the publication of <i>L’Eau Forte</i>. With the support of Belgian art collector Paul Leroi, Chauvel continued to publish <i>L’Art</i> until 1907.
