Books of Hours were produced in great numbers. They were made for ordinary people and were produced in lay workshops. They are small and often highly decorated and were intended for reading in the home. The owner of a Book of Hours was meant to stop eight times a day and read the appropriate text as in monastic orders. The central text of a Book of Hours was the Hours of the Virgin. This comprised prayers and Psalms intended to be used in honour of the Virgin Mary at particular hours of the day.\r\n\r\nThis page is from the Office of the Dead, which would be said around the bier of a dead person. It was also said daily as a reminder of one's mortality. Pictures or miniatures appear at the beginning of the text to guide the thoughts of the user.","physicalDescription":"Page from a Book of Hours showing the Raising of Lazarus.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"parchment","id":"AAT11851"},{"text":"pigments","id":"x33204"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"illumination","id":"AAT220539"},{"text":"writing","id":"AAT54698"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Water-based pigments, gilding and ink on parchment","categories":[{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Manuscripts","id":"THES48922"},{"text":"Manuscript cutting","id":"THES275182"},{"text":"Medieval and renaissance","id":"THES271264"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG1686"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"EDUC","shelf":"11A","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Manuscript cutting","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"illuminated","id":"AAT220539"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1470","earliest":"1465-01-01","latest":"1474-12-31"},"association":{"text":"illuminated","id":"AAT220539"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"9015A","id":"O90576"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"9015B","id":"O93353"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"9015C","id":"O93356"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"180","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"120","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Part of cuttings purchased in batches from William Henry James Weale in 1883, 95 on 9 April 1883, 258 on 17 April 1883, 20 on 20 February, for the total sum of £96.7.2 (now Museum nos 8972-9042).","historicalContext":"Data taken from notes compiled by Rowan Watson.
